8 New Year Design Resolutions

With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about those New Year resolutions. There are some resolutions that are just too hard to keep but a refreshed home is something that is definitely achievable!

Here we share some of our best new year decorating tips that will have you feeling ‘new year, new me’ all year long!

1. Clean Out Those ‘Shove it in There’ Drawers.

Every household has one... or ten. These drawers seem to house everything from old chargers to batteries, instruction manuals and lightbulbs... everything. Everyone has a little hoarder in them and this drawer is where it’s hidden. As the New Year approaches, it’s time to clear out these drawers and organise them. It’s probably time to let go of a few things too... so don’t hold onto anything that you haven’t used in the last 12 months!

2. Organise Your Pantry

Just because your pantry is out of sight, doesn’t mean it’s out of mind! Its time to go though your pantry, throw out old items and look at introducing a labelling system for dry food items such as grains and pastas. Put the things that you use the most on the shelves at eye level and the things you use less, higher up. If you are looking for more space, then jars can also look really stylish out on display – making them an ideal choice to save space in your pantry.

3. Repaint Your Walls

Give one or more of your walls a fresh lick of paint, depending on how much you want to do. If you are feeling like you are over plain white, play with something fresh and different to ring in the New Year. You’d be surprised with how much a splash of colour will change the entire dynamic of the room.

4. Dress One of Your Walls with Wallpaper

If you want to go further than a fresh coat of paint, look to create a feature wall with wallpaper. Wallpaper is inexpensive and is a great way to completely change a space. It becomes a piece of art, the focus of a room. Make sure it compliments the furniture you already have in your room. At the moment we’re loving banana palms on pink. Think Beverly Hills hotel in LA – luxurious and tropical vibes to perfectly dress a sitting room facing your alfresco dining area.

5. Install Some New Pendant Lights

Is your dining room space lacking a little something? Install a beautiful, sculptural pendant light over the dining room table to create a necessary focal point. Pendant lights are a great way of adding an artistic element to a room that is lacking character. Beacon Lighting has an incredible range of largely inexpensive pendant lights to suit any design theme you have in your home.

6. Invest in Some Indoor Plants (and keep them alive!!)

Indoor plants are great in a space without an outdoor living area and are just a great way to bring life into any home! They are natural air purifiers and studies have shown that the presence of indoor plants helps to alleviate stress - the perfect aid in helping you achieve all your New Year’s resolutions! Invest in some quality indoor plants and do your research so you know exactly how to care for them. Most indoor plants need natural light so if you don’t have much natural light, opt for cacti!

7. Organise Your ‘Home Office’

Some call it a home office, others a space where you leave all your bits and pieces. Whether it be old phone bills or magazines, it’s time to go through this space and clear it out so that you can start your new year with a clean slate. There is nothing more stressful than working in a crowded space. Organised spaces equal organised minds!

8. Give Your Garden Some TLC

Take a day to really attend to your garden. Clear out your gutters and old leaves, wash your pavers and attend to any plants that need clipping. Clear out cobwebbed corners. If you have any outdoor lighting that needs replacing, now is a good time to do this too!
